ROMAN INC - SAINT DYMPHNA - PATRONESS OF MENTAL HEALTH

Figurine comes nicely displayed in a box with a front window, with a prayer on the front and the story of the Saint on the back, and a prayer card inside.

"Prayer in honor of St. Dymphna:
Lord Jesus Christ, You have willed that St. Dymphna should be invoked by thousands of clients as the patroness of nervous and mental disease, and have brought it about that her interest in these patients should be an inspiration and an ideal of charity throughout the world. Grant that, through the prayers of this youthful martyr of purity, those who suffer from nervous and mental illness everywhere on earth may be helped and consoled. I recommend the patience to bear with their affliction and resignation to do Your divine will. Give them the consolation they need and especially the cure they so much desire, if it be Your will. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen."

Dymphna was born in 7th century Ireland to a pagan Irish king and a devout Christian mother. Her mother instructed her in the faith. When Dymphna was 14, she devoted herself to Christ and vowed perpetual virginity. Shortly after that, her mother died. Her father's grief over his wife's death brought upon mental illness. With hopes of filling the void in his life, he sent messengers to other lands to find another woman as beautiful as his wife. His search was in vain, for none was like the wife he had lost. The king saw that Dymphna was as beautiful as her mother had been, and evil advisors suggested that he marry his own daughter. In his madness, he made advances to Dymphna and demanded that she be his wife.
Dymphna fled the court with her confessor, Fr. Gerebernus, and some servants. The group found refuge in Geel, Belgium. Her father was able to track them down and ordered his soldiers to kill Fr. Gerebernus. He ordered Dymphna to return home with him, and when she refused, he pulled his own sword and struck off her head. She was 15 years old.
However, God can bring good out of every evil. The residents of Geel buried the two saints in a nearby cave. After Dymphna's terrible murder, those suffering mental or emotional illness would come to the site of her death and receive miraculous healing. In 1349, a church honoring St. Dymphna was built on the spot. The church burned down in the late 15th century and was rebuilt and consecrated in 1532. Many miracles have taken place at her shrine. St. Dymphna is called the Lily of the Éire for her purity. She is the patroness of the mentally ill, emotionally disturbed, and those who suffer neurological disorders.
