"Prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus:
O Sacred Heart of Jesus, filled with such love, Your Heart is broken by my lack of caring, and pierced for my sins. And still, You love me. Let me consecrate to You all that I am and all that I have. Take my body and soul, and draw me closer to You. Let me rest in Your Sacred Heart, teach me Your loving ways, and help me to return Your love with all my being. Amen."
The Sacred Heart is one of the most well-known and widely practiced devotions. The Sacred Heart is depicted as Jesus' human heart surrounded by flames, encircled by thorns, pierced by a lance and topped by the cross. It represents Christ's long-suffering love and compassion for humanity. The fire represents the transformative power of His love.
Since the Church's inception, the divine humanity of Jesus has been honored. However, in the Middle Ages, St. Francis of Assisi and St. Bernard of Clairvaux encouraged special devotion to the passion of Jesus. In particular, they saw His wounded heart as a wellspring of the infinite love of Jesus. This special devotion was practiced by Franciscans, Dominicans, Carthusians and Jesuits from the 13th to 16th centuries. Since then, various sants and mystics urged special devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, including St. Lutgard, St. Mechtilde, St. Gertrude the Great, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, St. Catherine Labouré, St. Faustina, and St. Padre Pio. To them, the Sacred Heart represents both the physical wound to Jesus' heart and the spiritual wound that He continues to suffer when His love is spurned.
Devotion to the Sacred Heart is expressed by receiving Holy Communion frequently, going to Confession and receiving the Eucharist on the first Friday of each month for nine consecutive months, and celebrating the Feast of the Sacred Heart. The goal is to unite ourselves with Christ in all we do. In return, Jesus promised St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, He will give great graces, mercy, refuge and blessings.
