"Saint Padre Pio:
Padre Pio was born Francesco Dorgione in Pietrelcina Italy in the year 1887. His family lived on a farm and were shepherds. At the age of 16 he entered the novitiate of the Capuchin Franciscan Friars and was ordained when he was 20. After going home for a while because of health problems, he was sent to the friary of San Giovanni Rotondo where he remained for the rest of his life. While praying before a crucifix on the 20 September 1918, he received the stigmata wounds of Christ and was the first priest ever to be so blessed. As word spread of his holy priest, especially by the American soldiers coming home from WWII with stories about Padre Pio, he himself became the center of the pilgrimage for both the powerful and the curious. He heard confessions for hours and is said to have been able to read the consciences of those who held back from telling him some sins. He was also said to be blessed with the ability to bilocate, levitate and heal the sick with his touch and prayer. It is said that he foretold of John Paul II’s papacy when the future pope was a young priest visiting Padre Pio. He founded a hospital that cares for over 60,000 a year and founded prayer groups that continue today. He did in 1968 and was canonized in 2002 by Pope John Paul II. Many miracles and cures have been found to be attributed to the intercession of Padre Pio."
